Cleaning versus disinfection
01 / THE IDEA

Soil removal and antimicrobial disinfection are different claims.

02 / EXPLAINER

Cleaning is not disinfection

Cleaning removes dirt and organic matter and can reduce germs through physical removal. Describing a product as disinfectant or sanitizer makes a specific microbial efficacy claim under relevant rules. Surfactants, strong odor or medical-looking color alone cannot establish microbe killing. Any antimicrobial performance may depend on concentration, contact time, surface and organic soil.

03 / EXPLAINER

Claims require an evidence file

Identify target organisms, accepted testing, use conditions and regulations of the Egyptian or export market before stating efficacy. Properties of one ingredient do not validate the finished product. Labels should claim only what has been demonstrated and should never encourage mixing chemicals to seek stronger disinfection.

ILLUSTRATIVE CASE STUDY

How would this be tested?

If marketing proposes calling a surface cleaner a disinfectant, ask: against which organisms, at what concentration and contact time, using what accepted method? Review the intended market’s classification rules and efficacy evidence for the finished product, not one ingredient in isolation. Without that file, describe only demonstrated cleaning. Medical imagery or the word “sanitizer” cannot substitute for efficacy testing, and directions should never encourage mixing cleaning chemicals.

Practical evaluation checklist

01

Describe the product function accurately.

02

Avoid efficacy claims without approved testing.

03

Check local product classification and labeling.
