Water hardness and cleaning
01 / THE IDEA

Water is both a formulation input and a use condition and can significantly affect outcomes.

02 / EXPLAINER

Calcium and magnesium affect cleaning

Hardness mainly reflects dissolved calcium and magnesium ions. They can interact with some cleaning ingredients and influence foaming, deposition and soil removal. Water is both a manufacturing ingredient and an operating condition; plant water may differ from customer water. A successful test in deionized water therefore does not predict every household result.

03 / EXPLAINER

Test across hardness levels

Measure manufacturing and test-water hardness, then compare product performance at defined levels while controlling dose and soil. Inspect rinsing and any deposits or haze. Water-hardness management ingredients can be investigated when they provide measured benefits at acceptable cost and compatibility. Different results do not automatically mean the active-surfactant percentage must increase.

ILLUSTRATIVE CASE STUDY

How would this be tested?

Run an otherwise identical cleaning test in low- and higher-hardness water, keeping dose, soil and agitation constant. Compare residual grease or post-rinse marks and note any deposition. Add an intermediate hardness level to assess the trend and investigate suitable aids if justified. Report water hardness alongside results: success in purified laboratory water does not automatically represent every customer’s supply. The exercise illustrates test design without assuming an outcome.
